It’s 3am in the morning. My 10 year-old son wakes up and begins screaming out random words, waking up the household. He comes into my bedroom and sleeps next to myself and my husband. He continues making noises – not allowing anyone to sleep properly right through the remainder of the night.
From there he will wake up again at about 7:30am and continue to run around the house. He requires constant attention. I take my eye off him for a minute and he’s off in my office or room damaging furniture etc. My husband showers him and dresses him every single day. He requires assistance in the bathroom or you’ll find urine and faeces all over the bathroom. He defecates in his pants at least once a week and will require a shower immediately – the undies are, in my opinion, ready for the bin, however my patient husband will still wash them to save us some money.
We can’t go over to people’s houses because we’re afraid our son may damage their house and annoy people. We can’t go on outings as my son has no sense of safety and will run onto the road. We can’t go to the movies because my son can’t remain quiet for an extended period of time. We can’t go to a restaurant without my son making a mess for the restaurant. We’ve never done an activity as a family without having some form of trouble occurring.
After attempting to find my own support workers, I had dozens of workers come through my door only to never come back once they realised how high needs my son is. I could not find a worker who could last and build that rapport with my son.
When I found Care Beyond, it felt like a godsend. These guys have sent me workers who are patient, compassionate and genuine. These workers have built rapport with my son and changed our lives. I now use Care Beyond’s services nearly every day. I am so grateful and cannot believe I am able to spare a short amount of time in the day for myself. It’s truly a godsend.
